Hewa is today an open defecation free (ODF) village. Forty years ago, there had not been a single toilet in the village, Most houses have separate small toilet buildings a few metres away. Only a few of them are in poor condition and must be renovated. Very very few houses now even have toilets inside the building. The installation of showers is planned, but this project only makes sense if the showers are combined with solar panels to heat the water (estimated cost calculated 600 euros (70.000 Rs.) per household).
